Compass EOS, an Isreali-based chip company has developed the world’s first commercial chip-to-chip direct silicon-to-photonics based router that is capable of delivering terabits of bandwidth at a fraction of the size and power of existing solutions. The router, which is the first in a family of next-generation, core-grade modular routers, is designed to increase network capacity and speed, and it is powered by icPhotonics, a technology developed by the company.

The Nigeria Incentive Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has guaranteed close to N100 billion for farmers. This is coming just a few months after the body commenced operations. The scheme has also helped push bank lending to the agriculture sector to about 4 percent, from just less than one percent as at 2010.

Samsung Electronics, the manufacturer of mobile handsets has announced that it will be providing its customers in Nigeria and other pan-African countries with a 24-month “Accidental Damage from Handling” (ADH) warranty to cover screen and liquid damages to its new, flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone, at no extra charge. The warranty includes two free repairs in the event of accidental damage to the screen of the device. The new Galaxy S4 has be on sale at Samsung stores and accredited dealers across Nigeria since May 3, 2013, ahead of its formal launch in Lagos tomorrow.

As investment in renewable energy is surging globally and other African developing countries such as South Africa (SA) and Ghana, strive to take leadership in the sector, Nigeria apparently has yet to key into the sector despite the abundance of the mix of rich solar, wind, biomass and hydro energy resources in the country. Last year, Africa had about $4.3 billion of the $268.7 billion invested worldwide in renewable energy, according to data from Bloomberg New Energy Finance, but South Africa accounted for most of it.

The planned rebasing of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to raise Lagos State to Africa's 13th biggest economy by 2014, a report assessing the respective economies of the 36 states of the federation has shown. In its latest report titled, “Nigeria Unveiled: Thirty Six Shades of Nigeria” Renaissance Capital (RenCap), an investment and financial advisory firm, also said that with a per capita income of approximately $4,000, which is more than double the national average of $1,700, the wealthiest people in Nigeria reside in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
