A frontline pro-President Goodluck Jonathan campaign organisation, Goodluck Initiative for Transformation (GIFT) 2015, has commended the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) for a successful solidarity rally held for the President in Awka, Anambra State. Speaking to journalists in Kano yesterday after the launch of their ‘GIFT Northern Youths Empowerment Scheme’ (GIFT-NYES) initiative, a special programme designed to empower one million youths from the rural areas in northern Nigeria towards self-sustenance, the National Coordinator of the organisation, Chinedu Okpalanma, said his organisation was extending its congratulatory message to TAN for successfully organising the rally.

But in response, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, said the non-funding of the parties was constitutional and not until the constitution is amended, there is nothing the commission could do.

The naira gained 0.11 per cent against the United States currency on the interbank market yesterday, supported by inflows from lenders selling dollars to stay within a regulatory limit for holding hard currencies, dealers said. The unit closed at N161.90 to the dollar, up from N162.07 it closed on Friday, Reuters revealed.

President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to inaugurate the disbursement of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN’s) N220 billion Fund for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) today. The fund is aimed at providing support for the development of the real sector of the economy. Of the total fund, about 60 per cent or N132 billion would be set aside for women-owed enterprises.

Former Kenya Airways (KQ) CEO, Titus Naikuni has been appointed Chairman of Rift Valley Railways’ (RVR) Board of Directors, effective November 2014, as the railway operator continues its path to profitability. RVR, in 2005, got a 25-year concession to operate the 2,350 kilometre line from the Port of Mombasa in Kenya to Uganda, but growth has been slowed by intermittent change in shareholders. The board has also been reconstituted following recent shareholder restructuring.
