President Goodluck Jonathan would today 2 September, perform the ground breaking ceremony of the Second Production Line of United Cement Company of Nigeria (UniCem) Limited, the third largest cement producer in the country. According to the Managing Director of UniCem, Olivier Lenoir, the Second Production plant would be a state-of-the-art facility, with capacity to produce 2.5 million metric tons (MMT) per annum.

The Chicason Group of companies using its A-Z Petroleum Limited has secured an African Export-Import Bank’s (Afreximbank) $80-million dual tranche loan and credit facility to finance the company’s expansion activities in Ghana, with the importation of a lubricant blending plant, a plastic making equipment and the construction of a 40-metric ton tank farm. Chairman of Chicason Group, Chika Okafor in Cairo, Egypt, at the deal signing ceremony of the loan, said, A-Z Petroleum Nigeria Limited is targeting a major boost in its petroleum products manufacturing and distribution capacity.

Despite a challenging global economic environment, import and export trade volumes for DHL Express Sub Saharan Africa remain strong and are forecast to grow. This is according to Charles Brewer, Managing Director for DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa, who adds, “The first half of 2014, revealed strong continuing growth for DHL Express Sub Saharan Africa’s top three import trade lanes: the United States, France and China while the top three Sub Saharan Africa’s export trade lanes were to Great Britain, the United States and France.”

Until Wednesday August 20, nobody was really sure that the 2014 NBA Conference would hold as earlier planned. There had been stringent calls on the leadership of the NBA to cancel or postpone the conference on account of the imminent danger of the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. Like other Nigerians, the fear of Ebola by lawyers was the beginning of wisdom and most had decided to stay away from the conference in Owerri. The prognostication was that if one single lawyer with Ebola came into contact with other lawyers at the conference, he would be a vector and veritable agent of transmission to thousands of other lawyers.

A socio-political group made up of young Nigerians across the country, Democratic Young Patriots (DYP), has called on the delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State to support the governorship aspiration of former Lagos State Military Administrator, General Mohammed Buba Marwa, in the interest of the state and the North-east zone. The group in a statement released in Abuja yesterday by its national coordinator, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, said their call was a patriotic duty after assessing the antecedents of all the aspirants already cleared by the PDP leadership to contest the by-election even as they pleaded with President Goodluck Jonathan to show interest in the coming election because of the security situation in the North-east.
