Enugu

EARLY HISTORY

Historically Enugu began around the Nike village of Ogui. Nike in the Igbo language means "with strength or power." During the transatlantic slave trade and through slave raiding  Nike people acquired most of their lands. They used slaves for defence by placing slave camps at the edge of their territories so that it was harder for an enemy to access the free citizens. They formed an alliance with the Aro people of Abia State and became part of the Aro Confederacy (1690—1901) which was an Igbo organization that controlled slave trading in the Southern Areas of Nigeria. They also traded with Hausas from the north. The Hausa traders provided horses to the Nike which they used for rituals by the Igbo. Both the Aro and Hausa migrated back and forth to what is now the city of Enugu and were considered foreigners to the area. From being the capital of the Southern Provinces, Enugu became the capital of the Eastern Region (now divided into nine States), the capital of now defunct Federal Republic of Biafra, thereafter, the capital of East Central State, Anambra State, (old) Enugu State, and now the capital of the present Enugu State through a process of state creation and diffusion of administrative authority.

old enugu state

In the late 1800’s coal was discovered in Enugu. The first coal mine in the Enugu located in Udi opened in 1915 but was closed and replaced with the Iva Valley mine 2 years later. At the time Enugu was the only significant coal producer in West Africa.

The area now known as the Government Reserved Area (GRA) became the European Quarters located north of the Ogbete River; alongside this was a section developed for African residents located south of the river. The built-up area of Enugu comprised these two areas, and by 1917 the city officially gained township status. On the African side of the city a rapid influx of migrant workers sparked the development of squatter camps on the Udi Hills near the coal mines and the Iva Valley.

The discovery of the solid mineral and subsequent construction of a railway line linking  the Enugu coal fields with the sea port in Port Harcourt for export was at the time a major reason for the permanent urbanization of Enugu State. It became the seat of power for the then Eastern Zone at a time when Nigeria was divided into 3 regions and power was distributed regionally instead of in a federal/state partnership as exists today. And played an integral part in the Nigeria/Biafra civil war.
