The city of Enugu was founded in 1909. It grew up around a tiny coalfield. The railway lines connecting Enugu to Port Harcourt were completed in 1916, and those routes connecting the city to Lagos via Kaduna were finished in 1926. Enugu was the capital city of the proponent state of Biafra from 1967 to 1970, during the Nigerian Civil War, when the city was almost abandoned. Since then, it has recovered most of its earlier significance.
