The UAE’s official moon sighting committee has declared July 28, Monday, as the first day of Eid Al Fitr, official news agency WAM reported on Sunday.

The committee confirmed that the Shawwal moon had been sighted, and that Sunday, July 27, was the last day of the month of Ramadan. The committee, chaired by Sultan Bin Saeed Al Badi, Minister of Justice, held a meeting after Maghreb prayer on Sunday, the 29th of Ramadan, in Abu Dhabi.

Private sector workers in the UAE will get July 28, Monday and July 29, Tuesday, off to celebrate Eid Al Fitr, as per the official announcement made by the government.

Public sector offices in the country are closed this entire week, and resume work on August 3.

The month of Ramadan, which began on June 29, is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.
