Africa’s leading telecom carrier, Bharti Airtel is partnering with international music video channel, TRACE and global recording icon Akon to launch “TRACE Music Star”, a mobile musical contest that will include participants from 13 African countries where Airtel has significant presence.
The six months competition is expected to begin in October and will include countries such as Burkina Faso, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
Airtel Africa’s Chief Marketing Officer, Andre Beyers said the initiative is seeking to unleash the potential amongst youths in a bid to enable them achieve their dreams while developing the Africa’s emerging music industry.
Senegalese-born Akon describes the competition as an innovative way to identify and nurture dynamic music talents throughout the continent.
“The intersection between technology and artist development is elevated by the presence of this ground-breaking music competition concept,” he said.
The mobile contest – believed to be the largest mobile musical competition in Africa – will see the best talents in each country identified, and place them together for what will be the ultimate contest; the Best African Music Talent.
The overall winner will get a recording deal with Kon Live, a distributed label through Universal Music Group, and an intense mentorship programme with Akon in the United States of America.
