Unknown gunmen Saturday night shot and killed the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chinwike Asadu, in Amorji-Nike area within the Enugu metropolis, Enugu State.

Asadu was recently posted to Kwara from Lagos where he served as a Mopol Commander in Charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos.

He was billed to retire in May this year.
Also shot were Asadu’s police orderly, Aloha Olaniyi, and driver, Oliver Omeh, who were in his company when the tragedy occurred. They sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately rushed to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, where they are presently receiving treatment.

But peeved by the dastardly act, the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Tonye Ebitibituwa, operatives from Homicide Department, as well as those of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, (SARS) to immediately fish out the killers, adding that those who killed Asadu have murdered sleep.
On his way to Port Harcourt, according to a police source, Abubakar made a detour to Enugu to see the Asadu family.

THISDAY checks revealed that the incident occurred at about  9:45pm.
It was gathered that the slain commissioner, who hailed from Enugu State, had reportedly visited his hometown over the weekend, the first since his new appointment.

He was killed as he was driving to his residence after seeing off a friend in company with his driver and a police orderly posted to guard his residence from the Abakpa Police Division. He was said to have asked his official escort to wait at home while he went out. Little did he know that he would not return alive.

His assailants, who were said to have come in a bus, reportedly shot sporadically killing Asadu instantly and wounding the two policemen. They also took away the rifle of the orderly whose body was riddled with bullets.
A source told THISDAY that the orderly was shot on the chest, stomach, hands and leg while the driver was shot on his legs.

“The CP was driving into his personal residence in Amorji Nike after dropping off a visitor that night. He was with a police orderly and his driver at the time of the incident. Just a few metres to his house, they noticed that a bus was trailing them and before they could know what was happening, the gunmen had opened fire and killed the CP instantly. His orderly and driver were also shot and they were seriously wounded.

“The gunmen ran away in their bus before the CP’s escort team that was inside his compound noticed what was happening. When the escort team and sympathisers rushed to the scene, they met CP Asadu and his orderlies in a pool of blood. They were rushed to the National Orthopaedic Hospital where doctors confirmed the CP dead. The other two policemen are now on admission at the hospital,” said the source.

THISDAY further gathered that doctors at the hospital had battled all night to save the lives of the two persons as they carried out several surgeries before they could stabilise their condition.

The IG, reacting to the killing, assured Nigerians that although it is too soon to ascertain the motives of the killers, he said they had murdered sleep and therefore should not expect to have peace anymore.

“It is too early to determine the motive behind the killing, but the police would do everything humanly possible to ensure that the CP’s killers are brought to book,” he said.

The Police boss, who spoke through the Force spokesperson, Mr.  Frank Mba, a Chief Superintendent of Police, last night, promised to do everything within his power to ensure that the killers are arrested.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State police command has commenced  investigation into the killing, as Ebitibituwa, in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amarizu, has directed his men to launch an immediate manhunt for the gunmen.

Sympathisers were still pouring into the Amorji-Nike residence of the murdered police chief yesterday.
And shocked by the brutal murder, stakeholders in Kwara State have tasked the police to ensure that the killers of Asadu were urgently nabbed and brought to book.

Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, yesterday described as shocking and unfortunate the assassination of Asadu.

Ahmed, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, said the death of Asadu was a huge loss not only to the police but the state security apparatus in particular as he exhibited high sense of discipline and professionalism during his tour of duty in the state.

"The late CP Chinwe Asadu, in the discharge of his duty in Kwara State, contributed immensely to the sustenance of peace in the state and in the upholding of our values as a state of harmony," he added.

He further described Asadu as a quintessential police officer and prayed God to grant the family and his colleagues the fortitude to bear the loss.

Also reacting to the incident in Ilorin, former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Justice Mustapha Akanbi, also described the incident as terrible and uncalled for.
According to him, "it showed that no one is  really secured in Nigeria as of today.

“If a chief security officer of a state can be murdered in cold blood like that in his country home, then we are in the state of tension."

In his reaction, Senator Bukola Saraki  expressed concern over the state of insecurity in the country. He described the gruesome murder as barbaric and callous.

Saraki, however, called on the nation's police authorities to fish out the killers of Asadu.

Noting that the murder was a rude shock, the Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulrasaq Atunwa, called on the IG to unravel the killing.
