Leading mobile operator, Etisalat has launched a new mobile payment service called ‘Flous’ for its subscribers in Egypt that would allow them make safe and convenient money transactions via their mobile phones.

‘Flous’, which means money in Arabic, is only available on the Etisalat mobile network in Egypt and works on any mobile phone. For now, the service allows subscribers to transfer money to other users, load cash on their phones or take out cash through over 100 of Etisalat’s branches and 305 of NBE’s branches across Egypt.

In the future, it would be able to allow subscribers to pay bills, top up their mobile prepaid lines, and pay for goods and services at several merchants’ locations in Egypt, in addition to using it for e-commerce payments globally.

It is uncertain what the charges for using this service would be or whether the company would launch a similar service in other African countries in the future.

The company teamed up with the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) and Mastercard which has successfully implemented more than 30 of such mobile payment solutions around the world.

The new service is said to be an early implementation of the Mobile Payment Solution that MasterCard and Egyptian Banks Company (EBC) introduced to this 94 million mobile users market and represents the world’s first ever interoprable Arabic mobile money program.
