The battle of wits between Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and Governor Sullivan Chime over the Enugu West senatorial seat deepened on Monday as different groups drawn from the state endorsed the two leaders for the position.

While the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the zone and the traditional rulers as well as the Enugu Professional Forum (EPF) endorsed the governor for the seat, another group made up of professionals, political and business leaders under the aegis of Save Awgu Forum (SAFE) declared their support for Ekweremadu’s bid to return to the senate for the fourth time.

This came as Councillors of Awgu Local Government Area dismissed media reports that they had begun moves to remove the council chairman, Mathanus Nze, describing the reports as not only mischievous but designed to cause crisis in the council.

The councilors, in a resolution after their sitting presided over by its leader, Kingsley Okeke, however passed a vote of confidence on Nze, while reaffirming the suspension of three councillors including Okolo Solomon, Michael Kelle and Kingsley Mbah.

Meanwhile, the Save Awgu Forum, whose members besieged the country home of Senator Ekweremadu, at Mpu in Aninri Local Government Area, where they assured of total support and commitment towards his re-election, said those who are jostling for the position should tarry awhile since a champion is already occupying the position for now.

Speaking for the delegation, the political leader of Awgu people and business mogul, Baywood Ibe said that with the endorsement, Awgu people had spoken with finality.

“Save Awgu Forum is working for the integration and development of Awgu, we are here to endorse our Ike Ekweremadu and we will make sure he goes back. We all belong to greater Awgu, Aninri was carved out of old Awgu; a father cannot forsake his son just like a mother cannot forsake her daughter.
