Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Friday said the government would spend N10bn on construction of more roads in the state.

Obiano, who spoke when he inspected ongoing projects in the state, expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work.

The roads inspected, include 27 km Amansea-Ndiukwuenu-Awa-Ufuma Road, 4.5km Ndiukwuenu-Okpeze Road and 5.5km Aamansea-Agu-Awka Old Road.

He said the roads were vital to the food basins of the state, adding they traverse four local government areas of Awka North and South as well as Orumba North and South.

According to him, when completed, this will facilitate the evacuation of agriculture produce from the food basins of the state.

“We will keep a close watch on the progress and quality of work done on these road projects because we are determined to ensure that we achieve our target in agriculture,” he said.

At the Amansea-Agu-Awka Old Road, Obiano called on the residents to be vigilant and report suspicious movements to the security agents to forestall any threats to peace and security.

The governor urged the Hausa community living in the axis to maintain harmonious and peaceful coexistence with their host communities and comply with the laws of the land.

He called on other non-indigenes resident in the state to assist the government to secure their places of abode.

He restated the resolve of his administration to transform Awka to a befitting capital city of international standard with basic infrastructure, including shopping mall, event arena and other recreation centres.

The Commissioner for Works, Mr Calistus Ilozumba, said the roads under construction were located in `difficult’ terrains and awarded to competent contractors.

Ilozumba explained that the Amansea-Agu-Awka end of the roads would include streetlights and drains to check erosion.
