AD proffers solution to political violence

News » Politics

The governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy in Osun State, Senator Sunday Fajinmi, has said political violence will not be curbed unless elective offices are made unattractive.

Fajinmi said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday.

The candidate, who was elected on the platform of the AD in 1999 as a senator, said that political charlatans masquerading as leaders had taken over elective offices because they had money to buy votes.

According to him, the current practice whereby politics is far more profitable than running industries was why unscrupulous politicians are the ones leading the nation.

He said, “Before we can curb political violence, we must make elective offices less attractive. This will turn back many who are not genuinely interested in serving the people.

“There is do-or-die in our politics because political offices are very attractive. Many of those who are killing and maiming to get into offices will run away from politics if there is no more money there.”

Fajinmi also stated that most governors across the federation use security votes largely to perpetrate crime including arming thugs to terrorise their opponents especially during elections.

The ex-lawmaker advocated scrapping of security vote.
