The Alliance for Democracy (AD) has berated political parties’ leaders for charging outrageous fees for party nomination forms.

The National Secretary of the party, Rafiu Salau, said in a statement on Sunday that the high cost of nomination forms would turn politics into business and may ultimately lay a foundation for corruption.

Former Head of State and one of the presidential aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), had last week complained about the N27.5 million fees charged by his party for its expression of intent and nomination form.

However, Salau said AD does not see politics as business, instead as an avenue for service to the people.

“The party believes that to ask for high fees for nomination forms is laying the foundation for corruption. Unfortunately, if occupying elective office requires selling of properties or acquiring loans, some of the members of the political class will see an elective position as a business and an opportunity to increase their wealth,” he said.

Salau maintained that people contesting for elective positions should aim at  contributing to the development of their constituencies in particular and the nation in general.

“An elective office should not be portrayed as a business for generating personal revenue. In the light of this, the party will not follow the style of politics as business, which encourages demand for high fees for nomination forms.

“Therefore, AD will give its nomination forms free to all Nigerians interested in serving the people. The elective positions are not for the candidates but the people. The party will encourage the people to approach the good leaders in their constituencies to come and serve them.

“If the people spend time and resources to support every candidate, they  will be the beneficiary of the outcome. Therefore, the people should make their contributions to the best candidates and become volunteers to serve as party agents to protect their votes.

“The candidates of the people by the people will occupy the elective positions for the people.  In addition, they will ensure that the people who invested in them get the maximum dividends of democracy, “ he said.
