14 Die In Edo Road Crash

News » Politics

Tragedy struck yesterday when 14 persons lost their lives in ghastly motor accident along the ever-busy Benin-Okene Highway, by Ewu slope, in Esan central area of Edo State.

The accident involved a 15-seater Toyota Hiace bus, belonging to the Edo City Transport Service (ECTS) and a truck.

It was, however, learnt that the truck collided head-on with the bus when it was trying to over-take another truck.

While sources claim that the accident occurred after the brakes of the Toyota Hiace bus had failed, another eyewitness narrated that the truck behind suddenly smashed the bus against the other truck, resulting in the instant death of its 14 occupants, including the driver.

Corpses of the victims have been deposited at the morgue of the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Irrua, Edo State, while the injured victims are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

As at the time of filing in this report, men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were busy making frantic efforts to address the heavy gridlock caused by the accident.

The chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society in Edo Central, Mike Odiahi, who lamented the spate of accident at the spot, advised motorists against careless overtaking and urged them to always obey rules and regulations guiding driving.

Odiahi advocated the introduction of a compulsory driving school for all road users as a way of reducing road crashes, just as he appealed to public-spirited individuals to assist the Red Cross with ambulance to ease rescue operations.
