Today, she is recognized as the most popular Nigerian female singer. In her early days she did backup vocals and lent vocals to many international super stars such as Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Destiny’s Child and the late diva, Whitney Houston.

Early Life:

Tiwa Savage was born in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria and was relocated to London when she was 11 years old. She had a healthy upbringing, growing up in a multicultural setting due to her migration from Nigeria to the United Kingdom, and from the United Kingdom to the United States.

Her musical interests started while in high school, where she was a trombone player for her school's orchestra. She spent the majority of her young life in the UK and the USA, graduating with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Kent, and worked at The Royal Bank of Scotland after her graduation.

Music Beginnings:

Tiwa got exposed to the music world in London where she started doing backup vocals at the age of 16 while still in high school. She already possessed a degree in Business Administration yet to further her passion in music, she enrolled and graduated with a degree in Professional Music at the age of 27 from Berklee College of Music in 2007.

At the music school, she was motivated by the drive and passion of the younger students, at the same time not being intimidated due to her age advantage over them. She knew what she wanted and she focused on it. In 2006, Savage participated in the UK music edition of The X Factor and advanced to the final 24 while still attending the aforementioned music school. In2009 Sony/ATV Music Publishing (USA) signed her to a music deal as a writer. She has writted for many artists like Monica and Jaicko. Writing for others was thrilling to her, but she later discovered that writing for herself was more rewarding.

After a long stay and music trials in the UK and US, Tiwa Savage finally relocated to Nigeria in 2010 to join a thriving music industry at a time of great revival. Being a new comer, it wasn’t easy for her when she stepped onto Nigeria's musical landscape.

According to her, numerous people tried to discourage her from settling into music in Nigeria and stated that being a lady she wouldn’t be welcomed like other artists such as MI, 2face and others. But she was not deterred by their negative advices. She felt that home was home and that if she could do well in the UK she would also do well in Nigeria.

Tunji balogun her manager was a great helping hand to her entry into the Nigerian music industry. She said that he was always there for her, encouraging her to hold on even when things were not right. She later dedicated a song for him titled "Written All over Your Face". A verse says “I don’t feel like myself, When I’m with anyone else, You just get it right, That’s why I keep coming back, Time after time, and after time, Oh, baby, Oh. You get into my head, with what you do in my bed, Put me straight to sleep, Baby I’m falling deep, yeah, You do the things that make me weak”.

In 2010 her debut single “Kele Kele Love” proved all the doubters wrong. Instead of being rejected she became admired by many. The song was well received and established her strongly into the Nigerian Music industry.

In 2012, she featured on Flavour’s ‘Onyi n’atum Remix’. The same year 2012, she collaborated with Waje, Praiz, Timi Dakolo and Pamela Egoh on the Ovation Red Carol Theme Song ‘Higher’.
