Mea Mater Elizabeth High School (MMEHS) is a unique non-profit-making, comprehensive, co-educational boarding school established in September 2004 to break new grounds in the area of facilitating and actualising the potential of its students.
The major goal of MMEHS is to equip its students, utilising its abundant facilities, with all they require to live a useful life in any part of the world.
It is our conviction that the products of this school would be articulate, focussed and endowed youth who are fully developed academically, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, youth who would, between two diverged roads in a wood, take the less travelled by in order to make all the difference – unique personalities. MMEHS is a student-centred school where the classroom, dormitory, the refectory, the sports field, the laboratories and workshops are structured to give the best to the students.
Curriculum /Subjects Offered
Our curriculum is broad and well grounded to equip our students for a life of excellence and a better appreciation of humanity. We prepare our students for JSCE (both state and national), SSCE (both WAEC and NECO), UME (JAMB), TOEFL, IGCSE and SAT. Presently, we are operating with the current UBE curriculum, which includes subjects like Civic Education, Cultural and Creative Art.
In MMEHS, students have a wide range of accredited subjects to offer at both the junior and senior secondary levels. The subjects for the junior secondary level are: Mathematics, English Language, Basic Sciences, Basic Technology, Creative and Cultural Arts, Civic Education, Social Studies, Nigerian Language (Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba), Islamic Studies, Christian Religious Education, Home Economics, Business Studies, Agricultural Science, Physical and Health Education, French and Computer Studies.
A student in junior secondary three is expected to offer eleven of these subjects in Junior NECO.
The subjects for the senior secondary level are: Mathematics, English Language, Nigerian Language (Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba), Computer Studies, Further Mathematics, Biology, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Government, History, Christian Religious Education, Accounts, Commerce, Foods & Nutrition, Home Management, Clothing & Textile, Building Technology, Applied Electricity, Technical Drawing, Health Education, French, Music, Visual Arts, Typing & Shorthand, Geography, Literature-in-English, Senior Secondary Students are grouped into Sciences, Arts and Vocational/Technical.
Each student in the senior secondary three is expected to offer nine subjects in the WASSCE and SSCE, NECO. The school does not encourage parents to remove their children from the school in order to write the WAEC/NECO November/December GCE.
Our academic facilities are the best in this part of the country. Our conventional library is rich and filled with relevant and recent books on sciences, arts, commercial, vocational and other areas of general interest. Since reading makes a man, our students are tasked to read at least two novels per week.
Our science laboratories are well equipped and students carry out all prescribed practicals for easy understanding of the relevant science subjects. In fact, our laboratories are first class. The school produces its own distilled water, which are used in practical tests as well as during exams. Our music laboratory is well equipped with modern musical equipment to enable students appreciate music in the right context.
Other include Vocational and Technical Workshops comprising Technical Drawing, Basic Technology, Building Technology. We also have Home Economics, Home Management and Foods and Nutrition, Visual Art Studio, Geography and Agric Laboratories. In addition are our integrated Language, Mathematics and Computer Laboratories, among others.
The School has a fully-fledged Students Affairs Unit that attends to the complaints of students. Through this Unit, the students are given access to their parents/guardians. The Unit controls the entry and exit of students.
The school is a coeducational institution. The hostel rooms are well constructed to make it comfortable for two students to stay in. The Kings’ Hall (Boys Hostel) is some scores of metres away from Queens’ Hall (Girls Hostel) with strict supervision of the Superintendents and House Masters and Mistresses to ensure sanity. There is a Common Room in each of the Hostels that is well furnished with Digital Satellite Television (DSTV), which provides the students learning opportunities through some educational channels. There is also warm water for students who are allergic to cold.
There is a well-staffed and equipped Clinic that offers medical assistance to sick students, with a residents Doctor. Where the sickness could not be handled within the school, the patient (student) is referred to a hospital in the city in consultation with the parent/guardian of the student.
MMEHS gives admission to brilliant and intelligent young boys and girls every year. Entrance Examination is held every year at various examination centres to select qualified candidates. Suitably qualified candidates are given admission after admission interview.
