In 1973, while serving as a Mathematics Lecturer at the University of Lagos, W.F. Kumuyi started a Bible study group with 15 university students who had come to him requesting training in the Scriptures. By the early 1980s that small group had grown to several thousand, at which time Deeper Life Bible Church was formally established.

By 1988 the congregation had grown to 50,000, and now numbers 120,000 members, making it the third

largest Christian church in the world. Dr. Johan Combrinck reports that the Deeper Life Church not only has

an attendance of 120,000 every Sunday, but has planted over 500 churches in Lagos, 5,000 in the rest of

Nigeria (with an independent estimate of more than 800,000 members in Nigeria alone), and 3,000

elsewhere (with missionaries to 40 countries of Africa) as the movement missionary contribution.

C. Peter Wagner, in an article titled 'Those Amazing Post-Denominational Churches' wrote: "By far, the most rapidly growing segment of Christianity on all six continents is a type of church that does not fit traditional categories or classifications. Missiologists have recognized its presence for some time, but it is such a recent phenomenon that they have not yet agreed on a name for it. Perhaps one title that would fit is the term 'post-denominational."

"Go to almost any metropolitan area and ask to visit the largest Christian Church. Chances are it will be one of these new post-denominational churches'. In Lagos, Nigeria, it would be the Deeper Life Bible Church, pastored by William Kumuyi. On a recent Sunday I saw 74,000 adults worshipping together, with 40,000 children meeting in a separate building across the street."

On August 7, 2012, a Deeper Life church in Okene was attacked by three unidentified gunmen, who opened fire on a Bible study group with Kalashnikov assault rifles, killing 19.

Pastor Kumuyi on the Alter

Situated at kilometres 42, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Deeper Life Conference Centre (DLCC) is a minimum of 362.71 hectares (895.89 acres). The topography is partly undulating and partly leveled, thus allowing for natural creation of basements and sub-basement for accommodation requirements of pilgrims.

Pastor W. F. Kumuyi’s vision of physical development as a factor of church growth gave birth to this project. The centre has been described as “the city of God’s people where men, women, youths and children will look up to heaven” and receive spiritual help from God. Among other things, it is where souls can be converted and receive the heavenly vision for an enduring, rewarding service for God. The adult auditoria are built to take 160,000 participants in a single programme.

Due to the size of the complex, two major dual carriage ways (about 2.25kilometres each) from the gate run parallel to each other along West-East axis and are linked up at strategic points with dual carriage ways labelled alphabetically. The beautiful road network, sidewalk, bus stops, breakdown parks, and the car park are all designed to ease human and vehicular traffic congestion, not only within the complex but also on the expressway. The exit route from the complex through Mowe village to the express also helps in traffic decongestion.

The adult auditoria are in-between the two major roads. Each of the 9 main adult auditoria fanned out from the sides of a hilly semi-circle rostrum, on a straight line, to a distance of about 250/ 50 meters (820/164 feet) at least. Thus, the auditoria are accessible from almost all sides in the complex. The youth camp is located to the right and the children camp to the left of the adult auditoria. The residential areas are located some distance away from the auditoria to preserve the serenity concomitant of wholesome and deeper communion with God.

Besides, the structural design of DLCC incorporates modern and wonderful facilities for the comfort of participants during programmes. This includes accommodation, water treatment/boreholes, sewage treatment plant, cafeteria, kitchen, satellite sales points, exhibition centre, and welfare block, communication tower/outfit and electricity. For instance, power is supplied through electrical conduit for both internal and external electrification. The streetlights in the conference centre make it a beautiful city. There are stand-by power generating sets equipped with Auto Mains Failure (AMF) mechanisms. It is intended that when the project is completed a bank, fuel dump, library, etc would also be located at different points for the benefits of participants.

Since the project kicked off by the last quarter of 2001, Deeper Lifers at home and abroad have continued to support it through their financial contributions, and manual labour especially of the members of the Lagos church. It was such an untiring support that made the conference center ready for the first nationwide programme - Success Academy for Youths SAY 2002, that held between September 11 and 15 there. Other programmes held so far at DLCC include faith seminars, retreats covenant seminars and combined Sunday services. Great testimonies from these programmes like Move Your Mountain Through Faith, September 20-22, 2002; Secret of Success, Prosperity & Triumphant Living, October 18-20, 2002; Total Freedom, Deliverance and Dominion, November 22-24, 2002; Come Up Higher for Revival, Progress & Promotion, December 11-15 and 24-28,2002; Goodness and Mercy, January 17-19, 2003; Experience the Holy Spirit and Be Transformed by His Presence and Power, April 17-21, 2003; Life Abundant, December 9-14, 24-28, have functionally marked DLCC as a centre for Divine Liberty, Conversion and Commission. The mighty hand of Jesus Christ has blessed thousands there. At DLCC, the burst of spiritual activities continues as God moves to harvest souls in these last days through His anointed servant Pastor W.F. Kumuyi.

Faith healing

DLBC's website maintains a set of "testimonials" from people who claim supernatural healings have occurred as a result of prayers being offered by Pastor Kumuyi. These claims include the reversal of paralysis, spontaneous growth of limbs, spontaneous disappearance of mental diseases, and such.

The church is firm on the teaching of holiness and living a practical Christian life. The most important teaching of the church pertains to its members living holy lives. The General Superintendent, Pastor Kumuyi almost always during all his preachings exhort members and newcomers alike to be born again so as to be qualified for the kingdom of heaven.

The Deeper Life Bible Church is well known in Nigeria and other countries, being known internationally for its strict adherence to the teachings of Christ, his apostles, and obedience to the word of God.
